CURSILLO
The Cursillo Movement in the Archdiocese of Detroit
The Cursillo was born on the Spanish island of Mallorca in the 1940's. It started with a small group of Catholic men preparing for a pilgrimage. They developed teachings on how to share their faith with family, co-workers, neighborhood and parish in normal everyday activities. Afterward, they discovered that what they were teaching had lasting value and should be spread to other communities. They continued to give workshops on those topics. This evolved into the Cursillo experience of today. The first Cursillo in the United States was held in Waco, Texas in 1957 by a Spanish priest and two airmen from Spain, who were training with the United States Air Force.
"Cursillo" is the Spanish word for "short course." The crux of the Cursillo movement is a 3-day weekend experience, which could be called a "short course in Christianity." What distinguishes Cursillo from other movements in the Church is the "4th day," that is, the follow-up opportunities after the weekend. The Cursillo comes to life in the gatherings of small faith-sharing communities which meet regularly throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit. These allow the individual to grow spiritually and to develop strategies which can help transform his or her environments in the light of the Gospel.
